Feb. 21, 2008 - Tour of California Cycling Race

Today's post is recapping coverage of the Tour of California cycling race during Stage Four, along Highway 1 through the Big Sur region of coastal California. The stage began in the community of Seaside, near Monterey, and ended in San Luis Obispo.

I shot the cyclists from the back of a motorcycle as we wound with the peleton and support caravan over the stage's 135 miles.

For the entire race, it poured rain. Endlessly. And heavy rain. Everything was drenched within an hour of the start. And nearly the entire race was into a headwind, which turned what was supposed to be a 5-hour stage into a 7-hour stage. So seven hours of pouring rain. (Hands down the worst shooting conditions in my entire career.)

By the end of the race, not a single piece of camera equipment I had was operating anymore. Even with rain gear protecting the cameras, water got in and killed two cameras, two lenses and a flash. (Not to mention I was so cold - soaked through four layers of 'waterproof' clothes - that I was shaking uncontrollably and slurring my words.

Warming up in the press room afterwards while editing and transmitting was wonderful.

A break from red carpet assignments to photograph clean-up at an oil spill that occurred at the Greka Processing Facility north of Santa Barbara. Oil from a broken pipe spilled into a creek bed where it reportedly flowed downstream 1/4 mile. This was one of numerous reported spills at Greka-owned properties within the past several months.

Following fire coverage of the Ranch Fire in Fillmore and Piru, I was dispatched out to San Bernadino to provide coverage of the evacuation center housing all the residents who had fled a pair of wildfires burning in the mountains surrounding Lake Arrowhead.

As wildfires tore across Southern California, I was dispatched out to the Ranch Fire that was burning in northern Los Angeles County and into eastern Ventura County where it was threatening the communities of Piru and Fillmore. Even though it was burning toward these communities, the fire was still in unaccessible areas.

In town, I found a strike team of firefighters from Santa Clara County that were providing structure protection for a outlying neighborhood in Fillmore. All the firefighters were congregated on the grass of Jim and Linda Nunes' home where the husband and wife had been cooking a barbecue dinner for the firefighters.

Following the rally, Barack Obama was the guest at a star-studded fundraiser hosted by Oprah Winfrey at her 42-acre Montecito estate. Because of the thousands of invited guests, who donated $2,300 each to attend the fundraiser, the common-folk guests where loaded up on buses at a showgrounds across town, bused over to Montecito to wait outside the back entrance of Oprah's estate until the gates opened for each busload. VIPs entered through the front gate of the estate (below).

Continuing coverage of the Zaca Fire burning north of Santa Barbara. (Very delayed posting as I realized it had never made it on the blog.) In the first two shots, helicopters are pulling water out of the Santa Ynez River as the fire burns just beyond the canyon. The third shot is of two dozers creating a fire break in the heavy, thick bursh above the Santa Ynez River. The last two photos are panoramic shots, one just before sunset and the other later in the evening, showing the size and scope of the fire. As of the date of this posting, the fire is pretty much out but not until after burning over 240,000 acres.

Continuing coverage of the Zaca Fire in the mountains north of Santa Barbara, Calif.: Access to the fire line is pretty much impossible as it is burning in extremely rugged terrain in a road-less wilderness area. The Calif. Dept. of Forestry is using tankers and helicopters for the primary attack and digging containment lines around the wilderness perimeter with bulldozers. Closest access via an unimproved dirt road was still three miles, yielding views of distant retardant drops from air tankers. Several staging camps are scattered in the area with firefighters taking a break from their two-week long battle with the fire, while released fire crews stop by a road-side vendor selling "Zaca Fire" t-shirts.

The Zaca Fire, burning in the mountains north of Santa Barbara, Calif. since the Fourth of July, took a wind-driven turn to the south toward a large cluster of ranch homes in rural Santa Ynez Valley, prompting evacuations. In the nearby town of Santa Ynez, a Red Cross evacuation center was set up at the local high school, where I captured workers setting up the shelter while evacuees signed in at the receiving desk.

The Point Buchon trail, south of Montana de Oro State Park in Los Osos, Calif., opened to the public for the first time Friday, July 13. The trail is on private-property, owned by Pacific Gas & Electric, providing a security buffer around Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. According to Sharon Gavin, PG&E spokesperson, the 1.8-mile bluff-top route with cliff-views, a large ocean-fed sinkhole along with access to the previously-closed Coon Creek Beach and sea caves, was established in an agreement with the California Coastal Commission for approval of the power plant's planned above-ground storage of spent radioactive fuel. Gavin says that there are plans to add two-miles to the trail network in 2008.

Below are a set of photos for a story depecting the municipal wireless Internet problems the city of Lompoc is experiencing. The city needs 4,000 subscribers to break even on their investment but only a few hundred have signed up for a nearly year-old service that is plagued with complaints. Photos are of the mayor of the city along with shots of the wireless transmitters strapped to the lightpoles around town.

The real challenge was finding vantage points that would show the transmitters with houses, considering Lompoc is a mostly single-story community in a broad, flat valley.

(Not too exciting, but they can't all be baseball and breaking news!)

Tuesday afternoon, a fire started in Griffith Park, Los Angeles and by nightfall it was making a run toward a line of homes below the park. In an unusual move for firefighting, helicopters continued their aerial assualt of water drops after the sun had set as the fire crested the ridge fronted by homes.

This is another series of photographs of Mr. Fred Kavli of the Kavli Foundation. Previously, the photos were for a wire service story. This time, it is for the Norwegian Academy of Letters and Science in Norway for use in advance of the Kavli Awards in 2007.

A completely different look than the previous series of photos of Mr. Kavli (seen in an earlier posting below) as the needs of the two clients differed greatly.

The week of October 23-28 was a quiet one with just two assignments, both portraits. Only a few photos so don't get too comfortable - no bagel and OJ this morning, you'll probably need just a granola bar and a shot of wheatgrass while viewing this week's work.

So most photographers have a Web site of their best photographs that usually spans their entire career. Isn't that a bit of a misrepresentation?

Why? It's not an accurate reflection of what a photographer is capable of creating consistently every time, from assignment to assigment. And that is what this blog is for: to show that day-to-day consistency in the pictures I shoot- not just the best of the best - posted here every Sunday recaping the past week.

The week started off with the Black Movie Awards held in Los Angeles. Arrivals on the red carpet (in order of appearance below) include Megan Good and the veteran actress Cicely Tyson. Inside during the ceremony, Oprah made an appearance to honor Cicely Tyson, Angela Bassett was honored as was a 'touched' Laurence Fishburne.

After Wednesday night's soccer match, my last shoot for the week on Thursday brought a different and 'challenging' assignment of shooting a comedian in a comedy club. Except the comedy club was a tiny, dimly lit avant garde, eclectic art gallery on Melrose in Los Angeles. And the animated comedian was on stage for less than five minutes.
